The Fall of Singapore

The entry below is a synopsis of our speakers talk on 18th Feburary 2026

This presentation was done by Mr Ian East, he started with a question, “in which wars Britain or England's worst military defeat” perhaps arguable? The Battle of Hastings 1066, or The Battle of Bannockburn 1314, or Raid on the Medway 1667, or During Yorktown in 1784, or The Battle of Wilson's Creek (Battle of Oak Hills), British forces were overwhelmed and destroyed by a Zulu 1879, or Gallipoli Campaign 1915, or The Fall of Tobruk in 1942, or Churchill suggested, the fall of Singapore in 1940.

But why did Britain suffer such a humiliating defeat? After all, Singapore was meant to be a port village. On a map there, there were various airfields, and the famous gun emplacements. Some of which were 15-inch naval guns. Trouble was, all these guns were pointing out to sea, on the expectation of a naval invasion. The reason for the colonies' confidence was primarily the naval base at Sembawang. There were squadrons of bombers sitting on airfields waiting in the remaining jungle, which were to protect the naval base while the army protected the airfields. However, by 1932 on, the Main Fleet to Singapore policy had changed, and a two-finned naval force was eventually committed. The modern battleship HMS Prince of Wales and the aging cruiser HMS Repulse, together with four aging destroyers. As for the Air Force, which was by October 1940, local commanders considered that 582 first-line aircraft were needed to defend Malaya and Burma.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Robert Luke Popham was appointed to be in overall charge, but when he arrived in Singapore, the RAF had just 88 aircraft. Oh, there's the 15-inch films of the naval base. They had just 88 aircraft, 24 blended bombers, 24 Hudson light bombers, 24 Willoughby torpedo bombers, and 12 CAC Wirraway. Ian went on to the surrender of English forces and all that happened between the surrender and the defeat of Japanese’s forces due to the deployment of the atonic bomb at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

A very good morning for all our members who thoroughly enjoyed the presentation
