Arthur Storey:- President.
Arthur joined the Group in 1998, he worked for 43 years in the Royal Post Office (Whitley Bay and Cullercoats), was a member of the Cullercoats Life Brigade for many years and was in charge of the refreshments section of the Group for 20 plus years. Arthur always says that it is an honour to help the Group in any way.
Mike Graham:- Chairman
Mike joined the Group in 2015 after a career in Law spanning several decades, most recently as a barrister working from Chambers in Newcastle upon Tyne. He was encouraged to join the Group as a means of attending interesting and informative talks on a wide range of topics, but has also found that the social interaction between members and the camaraderie of the group as a whole are a special bonus, providing friendship, support and encouraging a positive outlook on life.
Ian East :- Treasurer
Ian joined the Group ln 2014, initially attracted by the range of speakers each week. As a retired Health Service Manager, he found the Group relaxed and friendly; and now enjoys the social banter as much as the talks.
Ray Calboutin :- Group Secretary, Programme Secretary and Website Officer
Ray joined the Group in 2005 and took over the Programme Secretaries job in 2006, and the Group Secretary in 2013. He is a retired Control Systems Software Engineer with Siemens for over 37 years. Ray joined the Group to gain another interest in life and make new friends in a pleasant relaxing atmosphere.
Ray Kelly :- Registrar
Ray joined the Group in 2011 and took over the Registrar's job in 2018. He worked at the Tyne Tunnel for 30 years finishing as a traffic controller, he joined the Group when his brother in law said that it was a nice place to go and meet new friends and hear some interesting talks, so I decided to come along and have done so ever since.
"I would recommend the Group to anyone, so come along and give it a go".
Chris Smyth :- Events Officer.
Chris joined the Group in 2022, after a 30 year career in Education working in schools in Whitley Bay and Ponteland. He was initially introduced to the Group by friends and has enjoyed the variety of talks on a wide range of subjects, and also the opportunity to make new acquaintances. Of course he particularly enjoys a chat over a cup of tea and a biscuit as well!
Andy Louch :- Committee Member.
Andy joined the Group in 2024 after moving to the North East from Hampshire. He spent all of his working life in the marine industry with 25 years at sea and 20 years working in marine management ashore in such roles as Safety Manager, Marine Superintendent and Operations Manager. The vessels he served in regularly called into the Tyne mostly for repairs, maintenance and dry-docking and he is enjoying exploring the area more fully now that he is able to spend more time ashore. The Group was recommended to him by Mike Graham and he enjoys the wide-range of topics which are presented to the Group each week. He also notes that it is wonderful to meet such an interesting and diverse membership who attend and is learning a great deal about the region both from the talks and informally from the membership.
Jim Temple :- Committee Member.
Jim joined the Group in 2017, he worked for the Goodyear Tyre company for over 30 years, he was encouraged to join the Group by a relative who had been a member for many years. Jim enjoys the wide variety of speakers and subjects covered, he also looks forward to making new friends.
George Robson :- Committee Member.
George spent thirty-five years teaching History in local schools, served as a councillor on Wansbeck District Council for sixteen years (Liberal Democrat) and as a magistrate for thirty-eight years on the South-East Northumberland bench. For over twenty years George has been a speaker (once or twice per year at the Group) he was persuaded to join as a member early in 2023. He finds the company of like-minded men in the Group a boon to his life and has become an enthusiastic member of the committee.
